            Helping Children With Math Facts

Is your child or student struggling to remember the basic addition or subtraction math facts? When basic math facts are not automatic it makes other math tasks more difficult and time consuming. Maybe you've tried the basic flash card methods and there doesn't seem to be any improvement. Many children retain information better when learned in a relaxed environment such as when playing a game. You can do this with things you probably already have around the house. To practice basic addition and subtraction facts... try these simple games.

*Use dice. Roll 2 dice and add or subtract the numbers. It can be played alone or with 2 or more players. The player with the highest answer gets to keep thier score... all others get a zero. (Regular dice only allow for practice of fact families 1-6. Other types of dice with different numbers of sides (polyhedral dice) can be easily purchased online.

*Use a basic deck of playing cards. Remove all of the face cards. Use the Ace to stand for 1. Turn over 2 cards and add or subtract the numbers. It can be played alone or with 2 or more players. The player with the highest answer gets to keep thier score... all others get a zero.

*Use dominoes. Turn over a domino and add or subtract the numbers on each half of the domino. It can be played alone or with 2 or more players. The player with the highest answer gets to keep thier score... all others get a zero.
